The Dominican diaspora is a phenomenon of global relevance that has been the subject of study by the Institute of Dominicans Abroad (INDEX) for two consecutive years.

Gobaltima presents the information offered by this organization in its news section.

The entity has prepared the Sociodemographic Registry of Dominicans who reside outside the national territory, with the purpose of better understanding the characteristics and realities of this community and using this information as a basis for the formulation of public policies.

According to data collected until December 2022, provided by more than 111 independent States and territories, it is estimated that the Dominican diaspora reaches a number of 2,835,593 individuals. This number represents an increase of 12% compared to the previous year, which implies an increase of 303,975 Dominicans abroad compared to 2021.

It is important to highlight that the presence of Dominicans abroad is skewed towards the female gender, with 53.8% of the total, while men represent 46.2%. This data reflects a significant demographic trend that can be subject to more detailed analysis by experts in migration and population studies.

Regarding the geographical distribution of the diaspora, the United States stands out as the country with the highest concentration of Dominicans, housing 84.4% of the community, which is equivalent to 2,393,718 individuals. This figure places the United States as the main destination for Dominican migration worldwide.

In this regard, Dr. María López, an expert in international migration, points out that "the choice of the United States as the main destination of the Dominican diaspora responds to a combination of historical, economic and social factors, which have driven the migratory flow from the Republic. Dominican to this country for decades."

It is also relevant to note that, as in other regions of the world, in the United States the presence of Dominican women is slightly greater than that of men, representing 52.9% of the total, while men constitute 47.1%. This phenomenon may be related to specific family, work and social dynamics, on which gender and migration experts could provide a more in-depth analysis.

In summary, the Dominican diaspora is a diverse and significant community whose geographical distribution and demographic characteristics offer a fertile field for research and the design of policies that promote their integration and well-being in host countries.
